Ruth Emmel received her B. S. degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and her M. S. degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She majored in curriculum and supervision. Ruth began her teaching career in the Fox River Valley of Wisconsin before moving to the northwest suburban area of Chicago. In both Wisconsin and Illinois she specialized in teaching middle grade students. She served on the district’s Curriculum Advisory Council, which recommends and oversees the curriculum changes and new textbook adoptions. Ruth has also authored some teaching materials for Teaching Ink. While teaching Ruth had her students do genealogy research of their families and saw some interesting results that came out of this unit. She had an interest in genealogy before she started to do any research, because her parents often talked family with each other at the dinner table. She has been working on her own research for more than twelve years. Ruth leads the German Roots Special Interest Group for the Lee County Genealogical Society and writes articles for them.
